Typical Living and Learning Costs
New Zealand is one of the safest and most beautiful countries in the world. With excellent study opportunities and world-class education, it has become one of the most attractive destinations for international students. Due to its low cost of living and exclusive facilities, large number of international students choose to study in New Zealand every year.
Accommodation – The cost of accommodation will vary depending on how you want to live. The national median rent for a three-four bedroom house is NZ$565 per week in 2020, or NZ$215 a room per week.

Food – The cost of living will also depend on how well you manage food costs. The prices of some of the most elementary items are higher in big cities.
The University of Otago’s estimated weekly food costs for a basic healthy diet for an adult man in 2019 were: Auckland $71, Wellington $68, Christchurch $70, and Dunedin $68. Prices vary depending on where you choose to shop.
Transportation – All New Zealand cities and most towns have buses, and some areas offer cheaper bus fares for students. Auckland and Wellington have train services to outer suburbs. Fuel prices are monitored by Petrolwatch.
Tuition fees – Tuition fees vary depending on the studies you choose. Prices of general English courses could start from £175 per week.
Now, UK and EU students at English universities are required to pay up to £9,250 (~US$13,050) per year. International undergraduate tuition fees vary considerably, starting at around £10,000 (~US$14,130) and going up to £38,000 (~US$53,700) or more for medical degrees (source: Reddin Survey of University Tuition Fees).

New Zealand is a beautiful country and Cambridge is the most beautiful town, it is set up like an old English style town, green and peaceful. People in Cambridge are different. I always find it is easy to mix with Kiwis because they are so friendly, they help me in sport, in class and never mind to explain to me again and again if I don’t understand. The same with my homestay, I felt I was at home and confidently share my thinking with my homestay mother, just like my own Mum.

People are very nice and the teachers are very keen on helping students at any stages. That helps me a lot to improve my English which is the key thing in studying and communicating.
The homestay people are really nice, I feel like a part of the family. This year I’m staying with a family with four kids.
School is very interesting with many different activities for students. The teachers are willing to help anytime and offer lots of tutorial to help students to catch up with the lesson. After high school, I can choose to go to University in New Zealand or somewhere else. But there will be one certain thing, I will go back to New Zealand sometimes to visit all my good friends and I will never forget them later or the people. New Zealand is a part of my life.
